Parental Controls

Last updated: October 26, 2026

Smoothcast makes a best-effort commitment to minors' safety and parent or guardian control. This is not a certification of COPPA or other legal compliance, and does not replace applicable legal obligations.

This page explains how a parent or legal guardian can set up and manage a Smoothcast child account for a child under 14, and the limits of what these controls can do. It forms part of, and should be read with, our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

1. Who can use parental controls

  • The account holder must be an adult parent or legal guardian of the child.
  • The family plan is offered only to people located in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. It cannot be selected elsewhere.
  • Child accounts are for children under 14. Children must not create their own Smoothcast accounts.

2. The family plan

  • Parental controls cost $1.99 a month per child login, billed annually ($23.88 a year, US dollars). It supports the parental controls service and is not a subscription to any channel or streamer.
  • Each subscription covers one child account.
  • You can cancel at any time from your billing page. Access continues until the end of the paid year. When the plan ends, the child account is paused. Your own account is not affected.
  • Payments are processed by the processing banking service under its own timelines and restrictions. Smoothcast does not store card or bank details.

3. Two separate logins

  • Parent / guardian login: your own account and password. Only you can change your child's settings.
  • Child login: a username and password that you choose. No email address is needed for the child. You can reset the child's password at any time.
  • Keep your own password private. A child who knows it could change their own settings.

4. What you can control

  • Categories: choose any categories and subcategories to hide. Hidden content is removed from category rows, browsing, search, the schedule and live listings while your child is signed in. Blocking a category also blocks its subcategories.
  • Channels: hide individual channels, even in categories you allow.
  • Chat: chat starts off. You can turn it on or off at any time.
  • Viewing time: set allowed days, time windows, a time zone and an optional weekly viewing allowance. Restricted channel visits show guardian guidance, and active viewing stops when access expires. These limits apply to the signed-in child account, not signed-out access to public media.
  • Pause or delete: you can pause the child account or delete it permanently.

Child accounts can't send private messages or make purchases. Public streaming requires verified parental consent, explicit parent approval and a connected authenticator; the parent becomes a moderator. Parental verification is not yet connected, so child viewing and streaming remain pending rather than being treated as legally verified.

5. Important limits and your responsibility

Parental controls only work while your child is signed in to their own child account. They do not apply when Smoothcast is used while signed out, signed in to another account, or on another device or browser.

Content is categorized by the people who create it, and classification may not always be accurate or complete. Parental controls reduce exposure but cannot guarantee that a child will never see unsuitable material.

It is the viewer's, parent's or guardian's responsibility to use these safeguards, supervise their child's viewing, and use any device- or network-level controls they consider appropriate.

6. Children's information

  • For a child account we keep only the username, display name, the settings you choose, and the basic activity needed to run the service, such as follows and chat messages if you turned chat on.
  • We do not ask children for an email address, phone number or payment details, and we do not sell children's information.
  • Deleting the child account permanently removes its login and settings. Some records may be kept where the law requires it.
  • Use Family controls to review account information, consent history, aggregate viewing totals and recent chat, download a private review, request a complete review or deletion, or withdraw consent and pause access. A deletion request is not a confirmation of completed erasure; records legally required for financial or legal purposes may remain.
  • Consent notices are versioned. An acknowledgment, payment or authenticator alone is not verified parental consent. Age bands and jurisdiction information remain private. A legally approved verification method and retention policy are still required before launch for minors.

Where you live

Children's privacy and online safety laws differ across the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean nations and territories. Smoothcast asks for a parent or guardian to create and control every child account, and collects as little information about children as possible. Where local law sets a different age, consent rule or right to see or delete a child's information, that law applies. Nothing on this page is legal advice.

7. Signed-out viewing

People who are not signed in can watch public content but can't chat. Parental controls do not apply to signed-out viewing.

8. Getting started

Sign in to your own account and open Family controls to buy the plan and create your child's login.
